Video Production

Newsline News Read – February 19, 2015

The reason why I went back to school was so that I could land a career as an on-air radio personality; one of those cool hosts that are always so popular. But when I started getting into things, I realized my passions were steering me in another direction. I started becoming increasingly more comfortable with news reporting, seeing the benefit of being informed, and taking pride in being the voice that brings that information to the public.

Smooth Sailing Trailer

One of our course requirements was pitching a documentary idea to executives of MTS TV’s video-on-demand service called “Stories from Home”. My idea was to tell the story of the sea cadet corps that I’ve been a part of for the last 9+ years; the history, the current goings-on, how difficult it is to operate a sea cadet corps in the middle of what’s basically a landlocked province. My doc wasn’t picked up, but the three that were definitely deserved it! And it’s not like I’m giving up on making it; once I’m done school, I’ll refine it and make it something MTS can’t resist.

Tim Burton Movie Review

This school project was my first attempt at something that resembled a video blog. The format was structured as it was because of the criteria set out by the instructor of the class. Having only been taught to edit with Avid previously, I used this video to teach myself to edit with Adobe Premiere Pro.

How to Tie a Tie

Another school project, my first video that required a multi-cam edit. The main challenge I faced with this project was the fact that we had to use a lavaliere mic because we didn’t have access to another type of mic. Because of that, I still had to have the lav attached to my shirt while I was tying the tie, creating a lot of static and movement noise. So I rerecorded some voiceover, edited it around the video, and made the best of it.

City Stories

This was an interesting project to work on, mainly because this was the first group project we had to work on. This meant that I had to take other people’s thoughts and ideas into account when filming the video. We all edited our own version, but the group went down with one camera to get our shots and interviews.

Stop Motion Sandwich

Stop motion is really its own mental strain; the amount of preparation that goes into even a single frame is unreal. Anyone that has done stop motion before knows exactly what I’m talking about. That being said, by the time it was all finished and exported, I had a lot of fun. It presented it’s own unique challenge, and a challenge it was! There were some things our group couldn’t work around and just kind of had to live with, but overall I’m happy with how it turned out.

ACCtv Pilot – CET

A project that was new to us was the startup of ACCtv, a weekly YouTube series that highlights things happening around the college. A videographer and an interviewer would go around and look for something to profile, whether that be a person, event, or course at the school. The way the pilots were set up, the college recruitment department gave us an initial list of six focus subjects that they wanted us to make episodes, and I had been given the CET program. It was difficult and interesting because:

1) I didn’t know a thing about this program. This guy could’ve been feeding me lies the whole time, and I wouldn’t have known the difference,

2) The interview subject that the instructor set us up with was clearly not comfortable in front of a camera, so we had to go back in post-production and sequence fragments together to make it look interesting and tangible. I hope we managed to do that.

On top of interviewing, I was tasked with making the show intro. Aside from the show’s logo and the filming of the hand pressing the button, I designed the Photoshop set, compiled sound effects (minus the intro music), and sequenced them together with the “push” into the television.
